AFCAT 2020 – Notification & Details

Indian Air Force issued a notification for the aspirants who wish to join in technical and non-technical fields. An AFCAT exam will be conducted for the students for selection in various areas in Indian Air Force.

Generally, The Air Force Common Admission Test is conducted twice in a year. This AFCAT exam applies to both technical and non-technical fields. Students who are eligible to a particular post can apply from here official website.

In Indian Air Force there are two types of commissions-

  • Short Service Commission(SSC)
  • Permanent Commission (PC)

Short Service Commission (SSC):

In this Commission, Candidates can work up to 10 years and can extend for about four years maximum. So, a person can work overall 14 years in this program.

Permanent Commission (PC):

Here, the employment is permanent. In this program, a person can work till whenever he wants and moreover can work until his age of retirement.


There are three different categories where one can apply depending upon the eligibility criteria.

  • Flying Branch – Short Service Commission (SSC)
  • Technical Branch– Short Service Commission and Permanent Commission (PC)
  • Ground Duty Branch– Short Service Commission and Permanent Commission

Different Types Of Post’s in AFCAT

Flying Branch:

In this program, both men and women can apply for this AFCAT post. Yearly there are 200+ posts generated. Eligible candidates can apply online from the official air force India website.

Candidates who are selected in this program via AFCAT exam can work up to 10 years and extend a maximum of 4 years after the tenure completes.

Minimum Requirements:   Candidates must have a minimum height of 162.5 cms or above with 6/6 vision in one eye and 6/9 in another eye.

Age Limit: 20 to 24 Years for this AFCAT Exam.

Education Qualification: A student must score 60% of marks in any degree field from a recognized university and should have science, maths as essential disciplines in 10+2 level in order to write this AFCAT.

Technical Branch:

Aeronautical Engineers can apply for this post under Electronics and Mechanical programs through AFCAT 2020. Other people who have the relevant degree can also apply and eligible to write this AFCAT 2020 Exam. The education requirements are given below.

Minimum Requirements:

Men should have a minimum height of 157.5 cms and women should have a minimum of 152 cms.

Age Limit: 20 to 28 Years

Education Qualification:

Candidates must have a four year completed degree with a minimum of 60% marks. He/She should have cleared Section A and B examination of Institution of Engineers(India) or Aeronautical Society of India.

Ground Degree Branch:

There are four departments in the Ground program-

  • Administration
  • Logistics
  • Accounts
  • and Education.

Candidates will work in the non-technical field which is related to servicing etc.

Minimum Requirements:

Men should have a minimum height of 157.5 cms and women should have a minimum of 152 cms.

Age Limit:

20 to 26 Years

Education Qualifications:

  1. Administration and Logistics – A three-year graduate degree with 60% of marks is mandatory to write AFCAT 2020 from a recognized university along with A and B section examination certificate from Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India.
  2. Account Posts – A 3-year B.Com Degree from a recognized college with 60% of marks.
  3. Education Posts – A minimum of 2-year (MBA/MCA/M.Sc)  postgraduate degree certificate with 50% of marks from various subjects like Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, International relations, etc. or 60% of marks from a graduate degree in education.

Exam Pattern AFCAT

The AFCAT examination is conducted twice in a year. The first phase of the exam is held in February and the notification for this exam will be published in the month of December 2017.

The second phase of examination is held in the month of August 2020 and the notification is published in the month of June.

The hall tickets – You can download admit cards for both the phases will be available a month before the examination.

  • Candidates must check the official website regularly to know if the hall tickets are available or not.
  • Eligible candidates are requested to apply online on the official portal as soon as the notification drops.

This is a good chance for the Aeronautical Engineering Graduates who wish to join the air force and make their careers.

There are various categories of the examination pattern. Each category has its own core module. Candidates must be aware of the syllabus before the preparation.

Around 40 General Questions are asked for every category such as Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics etc and 40 questions are asked in core subjects.

There are six core modules –

  • General Engineering
  • Mechanical
  • Aeronautical
  • Electronics
  • Electrical and Computer Science

Both Diploma and Engineering Graduates should apply for this examination. The eligibility criteria are listed above.

AFCAT Admit Card.

Every Applied Candidate gets an admit card for the entrance exam. The hall ticket will be available on the official portal. Candidates must check the notification and open their individual accounts to download the hall ticket.

Candidates must take a printout copy and carry a government Identity card to the examination hall.

Make sure that everything is printed clearly on the hall ticket before you take a printout. Any discrepancy on the hall ticket will not be accepted at any cost.

There will be no alternative examination for those who didn’t attend the examination unless it’s a national issue. Always take a copy of your passport size photo to the examination hall. Sometimes if the photo or the signature is not printed properly you may face the problems.
